What is On Bastia?
On Bastia is the trading name for Jo Buckingham and her mahi from her home atop of Bastia Hill, in the beautiful Whanganui, Aotearoa New Zealand.
Digital equity consulting
Not having sufficient access to digital or alternative channels result in poorer wellbeing outcomes for many in Aotearoa NZ. I am available for consulting opportunities in this sphere, I am particularly interested in community-led initiatives, creating tech pathways, evaluating digital exclusion within digital transformation and user experience, and local government.
Rural connectivity advocacy
Collaborating with communities to review coverage to advocate directly for improvement under rural connectivity funding initiatives. Let’s work together to collect meaningful data and the real experiences of your cellphone and broadband coverage.
Non-profit website solutions
Simple 1-3 page website solutions for nonprofit groups, recognising that web presence doesn’t need to be flashy or expensive or hard for you to maintain to be fit for your community purpose.
Stand up comedy
Bringing a little too intellectual edge; a slightly unhealthy dose of politics and whole lot of cynicism to my own brand of observational comedy. Always keeping an eye out for 6 – 10 minute spots.
About me
Ko Jo toku ignoa. Kia ora I’m Jo!
Having access to a family computer and then the internet from the early to mid 90s; technology has been the enabler of many of the opportunities in my life.
Growing up in Invercargill a bit different, the internet was the connector and inspirer to find my people, chase my dreams and explore the world. After 8 years in the UK, I returned to Aotearoa and ended up on my current journey on how I can utilise both my privilege and experience to make sure that others can have that “a-ha” moment that digital can bring. Likewise I believe in our collective responsibility to not leave anyone behind in an increasingly digital-first world.
I am passionate about creating real tech pathways through community-led development and in particularly in our regions; recognising our people are best placed to know what they need and want. My career includes working in complex large multinationals in the UK; one of Aotearoa’s largest tech companies, and central and local government. This gives me a diverse perspective of how things do and don’t work. The last two years I have loved being in my new hometown of Whanganui and doing meaningful mahi for our awesome community.
I am self-taught when it comes to tech, lucky to be powered by the curiosity and troubleshooting that grew from navigating an internet pre-google search engines and social media.
